A call for the dismissal of Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko by Baye Mayoro Diop has sparked a strong backlash within the ruling party Pastef.
The controversy stems from a request addressed to the President, urging the immediate removal of the head of government. The statement quickly triggered outrage among Pastef officials and supporters, who described the remarks as excessive and inappropriate.
Several party figures publicly condemned the position. Member of Parliament Maimouna Bousso argued that such statements should lead to sanctions, noting that others had faced consequences for less. Dakar Mayor Abass Fall also strongly criticized the comments, calling them unacceptable.
Amid growing pressure, party members have called for an official response from the authorities, particularly the Ministry of Urban Planning, under which Baye Mayoro Diop operates.
An initial reaction came from within the ministry. A senior aide to the minister stated that Diop’s remarks were made in a personal capacity and do not reflect the institution’s position. He further called for disciplinary measures, including the possibility of immediate dismissal.
The episode highlights underlying tensions within Senegal’s ruling coalition, exposing internal divisions over the role and conduct of the Prime Minister.
