The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has officially stepped into one of African football’s most contentious disputes, as Senegal challenges Morocco’s controversial AFCON 2025 title win.

The Senegalese Football Federation has filed an appeal seeking to overturn the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) decision to award Morocco a 3–0 administrative victory, despite Senegal’s on-field triumph in the final.

Legal proceedings underway amid timing tensions

CAS has now registered the appeal and initiated arbitration proceedings, marking a critical phase in the case. However, the timeline remains uncertain.

Senegal is pushing for an expedited process in hopes of securing a swift ruling, while Moroccan authorities oppose fast-tracking the case, arguing that no exceptional urgency justifies it.

As a result, a final decision could take several months—or longer—before being delivered.

A case with continental implications

At the heart of the dispute lies the interpretation of CAF regulations following dramatic incidents during the final. CAF’s appeals body ruled that Senegal’s actions constituted a forfeiture, leading to Morocco being declared champions by default.

Senegal strongly disputes this conclusion, insisting the match was completed and that its victory should stand.

A defining ruling ahead

With both sides firmly holding their positions, CAS now stands as the ultimate authority in resolving the dispute.

Its forthcoming ruling is expected to have far-reaching consequences—not only in determining the rightful AFCON 2025 champion, but also in shaping legal precedents for sports governance across Africa.
