DAKAR — Ousmane Sonko will travel to Spain on April 18, 2026, at the invitation of the Spanish government. The Senegalese head of government will participate in the fourth high-level meeting of the “In Defense of Democracy” initiative, a mechanism launched in 2024 by Spain and Brazil.

This international gathering aims to bring together several leaders around issues related to democratic governance. The Prime Minister’s participation is part of a dynamic of consultation between states committed to these issues and reflects the Senegalese authorities’ desire to take part in international discussions on strengthening democratic institutions.

Following the Presidential Visit

This trip comes a few weeks after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s official visit to Spain. That stay, carried out from March 24 to 26, 2026, helped strengthen bilateral relations between Dakar and Madrid.

During this presidential visit, five legal cooperation instruments were signed, covering various areas of partnership between the two states. These agreements reflect a deepening of institutional relations and a common desire to further structure bilateral collaboration.

A €180 Million Partnership

The two parties adopted a sustainable development partnership framework covering the period 2026-2030. This program, called the Spain-Senegal partnership, has total funding of €180 million and constitutes a central tool for cooperation between the two countries for the coming years.

As part of this commitment, Spain has expressed its intention to support the organization of the Youth Olympic Games scheduled in Senegal. Spanish authorities have also indicated their willingness to align their investments with “Vision Senegal 2050,” the long-term development strategy defined by Senegalese authorities.

This sequence of high-level visits demonstrates the dynamism of the relationship between Senegal and Spain, a historic European partner, particularly in development cooperation and migration flow management.
